Year 9

Progress Lead Year 9 – Mrs C Doran

I am delighted to introduce myself as Progress Lead for Year 9. I am committed to ensuring a smooth and successful journey for all our students during this crucial stage of their education, especially towards the end of the year when they will choose their option subjects. This year will be an important one for students to recognise their strengths and decide which options they would like to take. Year 9s will all have an individual meeting with Mr Humphreys to ensure they are choosing the right option choices for them. This is something that takes a lot of thought, organisation, and planning. Please ensure you support your child and attend options evening when the time comes.

As Progress Lead for Year 9, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with transitioning from Year 8 to Year 9. I am here to guide and support each student as they continue to grow academically, socially, and personally. I have a wealth of experience and passion for education, and I am dedicated to fostering a positive and nurturing learning environment.

At Millfield, we have high expectations for the progress and behaviour of our Year 9 students. We believe that each student has the potential to excel; I work closely with teachers, parents, and students to ensure that this potential is realised. I closely monitor academic progress, offering guidance and support to address any challenges that may arise along with class teachers. Our aim is to provide students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for the demands of high school and beyond.

In terms of behaviour expectations, we have a strong emphasis on fostering a respectful, inclusive, and safe community. I work closely with students to promote positive relationships, encourage good behaviour, and resolve conflicts. I strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves, seeking help when needed, and taking responsibility for their actions.

We recognise that each student is unique and may require additional support –  learning support and heads of department ensure that appropriate resources and interventions are available. I collaborate with our school’s support staff, including counsellors and outside agencies, to address any academic or personal challenges that students may face. Our aim is to provide a supportive network that helps students overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.

During Year 9, students participate in the Graduation Program; this is a very crucial and exciting year for the Year 9s as they submit their last tasks towards the end of May. Any student who has worked hard to complete tasks with exceptional attendance will be rewarded and attend the Graduation parties and Graduation Ceremony in the Summer term. If you want more information, please visit the Graduation and Exceptional Programme area of our website.

I am confident that with my leadership, expertise, and dedication, the Year 9 students will have an enriching and rewarding experience at Millfield. I look forward to a year filled with growth, achievement, and memorable moments as we navigate this important phase of their educational journey together.
