Promoting British Values at Millfield

Promoting British values is an integral part of our curriculum. We have implemented measures to ensure its effective delivery, including:

  • Regular Assemblies and Class Discussions: To foster understanding of British values and their application in modern British society.
  • Enriched Curriculum: Exploring British values through subjects like English, RE, PSHE, Drama, and others.
  • Charitable Work and Fundraising: Encouraging social responsibility and community engagement.
  • Robust Safeguarding Practices: Promoting student safety, welfare, and respect for rights.

The government defines British values as:

  • Respect for democracy and participation in the democratic process.
  • Respect for the rule of law and its application in England.
  • Support for equality of opportunity for all.
  • Support and respect for individual liberties within the law.
  • Respect and tolerance for different faiths and beliefs.

At Millfield, we reflect British values in all we do. We aim to nurture our students to become safe, caring, democratic, responsible, and tolerant citizens who positively contribute to British society and the world. We encourage creativity, open-mindedness, and independence, while fostering respect for oneself and others.

Our approach to promoting British values includes:

  • Democracy: Encouraging student participation in decision-making, debate, and expressing views.
  • Rule of Law: Promoting clear, fair rules, teaching right from wrong, and respecting the law.
  • Individual Liberty: Supporting student choices, self-knowledge, and understanding of rights and freedoms.
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance: Fostering respect for all, promoting understanding of different faiths and cultures, and challenging prejudice.

Our commitment to promoting British values is evident in:

  • Students’ Development: Enhanced self-esteem, confidence, social skills, and academic achievement.
  • Positive Behaviour: Respectful interactions, reduced bullying, and a safe school environment.
  • Community Cohesion: Improved social harmony and positive relationships with the wider community.

We are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where our students develop the knowledge and skills to become responsible and respectful global citizens.
